Project: Our Sustainable Home
 | Solar hot water Our home solar hot water system consists of an 8-tube Seido evacuated tube collector and a Buderus S-120 tank (36 gallons) with a Takagi instantaneous gas water heater for backup, which typically provides us with all the hot water we need daily without using any gas from April thru October. As an aside, from the photo you may note that we also catch and store rainwater for plants.
Greenhouse We have used this small 10x12 greenhouse for over 10 years to grow lots of food for storage during the winter. All the fan systems are powered by the solar panel array in back of the greenhouse.

 | energy efficient appliances We have had the same Vestfrost fridge for over 10 years, which uses only 1 amp when running. We actually have two, one is in the shop. This gives us plenty of storage for food when we stock up on our bi-tmonthly shopping trips to Bozeman, about 60 miles away. We have extra power available from wind and solar so we use our microwave and toaster oven a lot. We also make coffee using a french press and use an induction water pot to heat the water. Purchasing "actual" energy efficient applinaces is key to real sustainability-ask lots of questions when purchasing appliances.
Composting We compost nearly everything so we make trips to the dump only about every 2 months. Composting is a very good idea whether you are urban or rural. We use all this compost on our vegetation and in our greenhouse.
